synopsis

Tuppence only, step in and see! To live with his physical hideousness, incapacitating deformities and unremitting pain is trial enough, but to be exposed to the cruelly lacerating expressions of horror and disgust by all who behold him— is even more difficult to bear.” (From The Elephant Man)

The Elephant Man, winner of numerous Tony Awards including Best Play, is based on the life of John Merrick, who lived in London during the latter part of the nineteenth century. Victim of rare skin and bone diseases and horribly deformed, he goes from the star freak attraction in traveling side shows to London society where he evolves from an object of pity to a witty favorite of the aristocracy and literati. His new popularity, however, only increases his frustration and isolation created by his deformed exterior. Has he simply traded one freak show for another?

The ASL Interpreted Performance, Sensory Tour, and a talkback with the cast will be held on the Sunday, January 22 performance at the Aurora Fox. The pre-show Sensory Tour provides visually impaired attendees an opportunity to explore the set and props of the show prior to the performance on a guided tour. To sign up for the Sensory Tour, please contact Tamara Arredondo at t.l.arredondo@gmail.com.

THIS PLAY CONTAINS PARTIAL NUDITY AND MAY NOT BE SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 18.

  • Phamaly's The Elephant Man - Stunning Performance!

    January 23, 2012

As both an actor and the son of an epileptic mother, I appreciate the demands that these actors’ disabilities can put upon them. That is one reason I was so thoroughly impressed with their uncomplicated ease onstage. I can honestly say this performance was life changing for me, offering a broadened perspective that blasts stereotypes right out of the water. These actors not only overcome their disadvantages onstage, but claim their challenges as a celebration of individuality. Also, each actor’s disability is detailed in their playbill bios, with links to websites for more information. Considering the assumptions and stereotyped images that dominant society (i.e. able-bodied/able-minded) continues to promote within the narrow frame of what disabled people “lack” (rather than what they possess), detailing one’s disabled status publicly is a bold move – a necessary move – and another example of proud ownership of oneself. ALL of oneself.
