synopsis
“Tuppence only, step in and see! To live with his physical hideousness, incapacitating deformities and unremitting pain is trial enough, but to be exposed to the cruelly lacerating expressions of horror and disgust by all who behold him— is even more difficult to bear.”
(From The Elephant Man)
The Elephant Man, winner of numerous Tony Awards including Best Play, is based on the life of John Merrick, who lived in London during the latter part of the nineteenth century. Victim of rare skin and bone diseases and horribly deformed, he goes from the star freak attraction in traveling side shows to London society where he evolves from an object of pity to a witty favorite of the aristocracy and literati. His new popularity, however, only increases his frustration and isolation created by his deformed exterior. Has he simply traded one freak show for another?
